Session 2: Embodying the Heart of a Servant Leader- Journeying with Jesus

Welcome back to our ongoing exploration of Jesus-style leadership. In our last session, we delved deep into the concept of leading by example, emphasizing the importance of reflecting the character of Jesus Christ in our leadership. Today, we continue our journey by shifting our focus to another vital aspect of this transformative leadership model: servanthood.

As we gather once again, let’s open our hearts to receive divine wisdom and guidance. Together, let’s offer this prayer:

“Father, unveil your heart to us. Through the lens of Jesus Christ, reveal to us the essence of true servanthood. Teach us to follow His example, not just in words but in deeds. May the spirit of humility and service permeate our leadership journey. In Jesus’s name, we pray. Amen.”

Our anchor for today’s discussion is found in Mark 10:42-45, where Jesus presents a revolutionary paradigm of leadership. He contrasts the oppressive leadership prevalent in the world with the transformative model of servant leadership He embodies. It’s a stark reminder that true greatness lies not in wielding power but in serving others.

In today’s world, we’ve witnessed the pitfalls of leadership driven by self-interest and ambition. Whether in the political arena or within the confines of the church, the pursuit of power often leads to exploitation and oppression. Yet, Jesus offers us a radical alternative—a leadership rooted in humility and service.

Jesus didn’t wait for his disciples to attain some arbitrary level of readiness before entrusting them with authority. He empowered them from the outset, teaching them the value of relational leadership. His actions, such as washing the feet of his disciples, exemplified the essence of servanthood—putting others’ needs above our own desires for recognition.

However, the call to servant leadership isn’t merely a surface-level commitment; it emanates from the depths of the heart. It’s about serving faithfully, even when no one is watching, without expectation of applause or reward.

As we reflect on our own leadership journeys, it’s essential to reconcile with our past experiences. We must acknowledge both the hurts inflicted by leaders and the blessings bestowed upon us by those who led with humility and grace. Forgiveness is the first step towards healing and embracing the call to servant leadership within us.

The essence of servant leadership lies in empowering others and bearing their burdens. Just as Jesus willingly bore the weight of our sins on the cross, we too must be willing to carry the burdens of those we lead.

In the days ahead, let’s reimagine leadership as a collaborative endeavor—a collective effort to advance God’s kingdom on earth. Let’s strive to see every individual through the eyes of Jesus, valuing each person as a vital member of the body of Christ.

As we conclude our session, let’s continue to seek the heart of God, allowing His love to transform us into vessels of humility and service. May our leadership be a reflection of His grace and compassion, drawing others into the embrace of His love.

Join us in anticipation for our next session, where we’ll delve into the essence of humility—a cornerstone of Jesus-style leadership.

May our words and actions bear witness to the heart of the ultimate servant leader, Jesus Christ. Stay tuned for more insights and reflections on our journey together.
